The Bandwagon Effect: Why Do We Follow Trends?
Whether it’s TikTok micro-trends or the latest fashion fads, it’s easy to feel as though everyone is jumping on to the same bandwagon. It’s not unusual to see people following the crowd. But why is this so common, even when the trends feel risky or out of character?
There is one human instinct that drives trends to popularity: the need to belong. Following trends provides a sense of connection with others that satisfies the need to fit in. Just as early humans depended on tribal life to survive, modern day humans also continue to seek social validation. This connection is so essential that it often overrides individual opinions and preferences.
The brain plays a crucial role in this behavior, where regions like the amygdala, responsible for processing emotions, and the prefrontal cortex, which aids in decision-making, work together to assess social situations. Humans are naturally good at identifying social signals, which then aids the ability to adapt their behavior in order to fit in with a group.
Moreover, the “Bandwagon Effect” is a psychological phenomenon where someone primarily does something because they see others are doing it, regardless of personal belief. People enjoy relying on the actions of those around them to guide their own decisions, whether it is trying out the latest foodie trends or even picking a political party to vote for.
Before the digital age, ideas were spread around through word of mouth and print media, and trends usually only circulated within a certain group of people. When social media emerged, being surrounded by trends every second of the day significantly amplified the need to follow trends, even if it was out of our own comfort zone. In fact, trying new and exciting things boosts the dopamine levels in our brain, making following trends even more addicting.
While following the crowd is a natural part of being human, it’s also important to consider when it’s right to make independent decisions. The pressure to conform is strong, but you shouldn’t lose your individuality in the process. Being able to make conscious choices is essential in striking a balance between fitting in with others and staying your true self, even if it means rejecting the most popular trends.
