In today’s fast-paced world, it's easy for many young people to get caught up in the pressures of nearing adulthood, balancing responsibilities, and striving for success. Amidst this hustle, staying connected to your inner child can offer a refreshing sense of joy, creativity, and emotional well-being. Embracing your inner child means reconnection with curiosity and imagination that come naturally in youth, while also allowing yourself moments of fun and self-expression. Whether through spontaneous activities, rediscovering old hobbies, or simply just finding time to unwind, staying in touch with your inner child is more than just a nostalgic escape. It’s a way to stay grounded and remember what makes life truly enjoyable.

“Children are full of wonder and joy, and it’s so fulfilling to keep that part of you alive. It allows you to see life through rose colored lenses without taking things so serious, which is so important today. In a world where everything seems so weighty, it’s important to have a childlike heart,” Junior Joanna Mengistu expressed. As we grow older, the world can sometimes feel more routine, predictable, and burdened with responsibilities. With this outlook, there's room for finding magic in the simplest things. Rediscovering a childlike perspective once in a while can offer a renewed sense of creativity and appreciation for the small moments. While also allowing a reconnection with the world around us in a more carefree way.

Despite this, many people tend to turn their backs on their younger selves, having a natural urge to grow and evolve while leaving behind any shortcomings or mistakes.

“People resent past versions of themselves because it may not be the version they want to be reminded of. It could be because their younger self made mistakes or was naive in certain situations, and they want to move past that,.” Senior Sophia Lehnerd said. Some may experience discomfort when reflecting on their past selves. We often view these moments with regret, wishing we had known better or made different choices. “However, what they are forgetting is that without their past self, they wouldn’t be the person they are today,.” Lehnerd added. Imperfections are an important part of the journey that has shaped and continues to shape who we are today. Embracing past experiences, rather than pushing them aside, can lead to self-compassion and even acceptance.

So, how can we stay in touch with our inner child? There are many ways people rediscover their inner child. Finding something specific towards yourself can really help grasp that feeling.

“Looking back at old photos of yourself and others, and hanging out with people that you grew up with is important. You can share stories, and connect through past experiences both good and bad,” Tyler Moran stated. Rekindling memories, especially with those you shared them with, creates an emotional bond through experiences. It may help us stay grounded by offering a chance to reminisce, laugh, and even heal through shared memories. Other than that, some may see their younger selves in others.

“The biggest way I stay in touch with my younger self is through babysitting. I also play with the kids and try to be involved in what they want to do. It reminds me of what it was like to be as a kid and how fun it was,” Brianna Scherschel explained. Connecting with younger generations can be a powerful way to reconnect with our own childhood. We don’t always have to look back to our past selves, but can find that connection through the energy and curiosity of children around us.

By staying in touch with your inner child, you reconnect with the true essence of who you are.. “Your inner child is who you truly are. The little things that you might’ve obsessed over that are now considered “weird” was what your inner child loved. Your inner child was the child that was never judged and believed could be whoever they desired to be,” Senior Alyssa Ramirez said. Continuing to nurture and honor your inner child can be a powerful tool for personal growth and happiness. By embracing this part of ourselves, we can remind ourselves of the carefree spirit of our younger selves to encourage us to approach life with fresh eyes. Whether through spending time with loved ones, reminiscing about old memories, or simply engaging in activities that bring out our playful nature, connecting with our inner child reminds us of the importance of balance and self-expression in today’s hectic environment, which often demands seriousness and responsibility.
