Korean War Veteran Reunites With His Japanese Lover 70 Years Later

Taking us back to the 1950’s, the love story between Duane Mann and Ayako “Peggy” Yamaguchi, during the Korean War, is simply profound and beautiful, and showcases the power social media holds, even on the elderly.
In 1953, then, twenty-one year old Duane arrived in Japan alongside the U.S Navy, where he met Peggy who worked at the officers club as a hat check girl. After getting to know each other, they soon fell in love and decided to marry. However, after the Korean War ended, Duane was discharged and called back to the United States. As a result, he was forced to leave a pregnant Peggy behind. But, when he got back he discovered that his father had spent all of his savings and that he was penniless. Duane promised that he would work countless amounts of jobs to earn money, including building highways around the Midwest.
Peggy kept on writing him letters to keep in touch, however, Duane’s mom was burning them as she didn’t approve of him marrying a Japanese girl. His sister brought him her last letter in which she said that she had lost the baby and that she was going to get married to someone else; she left no return address. And with that, Duane was forced to move on. He married a church girl, as his mom wished for, but the marriage was a turbulent one. Eventually, after remarrying, Duane had a happy 47-year long marriage, but his heart still longed for Peggy.
When he was 91 years old, Duane put out a last desperate search on Facebook. Strangers across the world, including Japanese media companies, helped him look for her and found out that she was still alive and living in Michigan. She burst into heartwarming tears when she found out that he was still looking for her after all these years. In June 2022, the two reunited and met in person. Duane explained that he didn’t abandon her, he just couldn’t find her. He also revealed that he kept pictures of Peggy in his wallet for 70 years.
"It was a pretty freeing experience for me,” Duane concluded, as he reflected on meeting and reconnecting with Peggy.
Peggy then shared her thoughts about the encounter, stating that she never felt abandoned. She knew that Duane was out there somewhere and that he still loves her.
This experience is a message that you should never give up when it comes to finding peace. It’s a reminder that, no matter how long it takes, you should never give up on finding peace and closure.
