Closing The Divide By Merging Trends
As you scroll through social media or stroll through bustling public spaces, you may notice a vibrant resurgence of retro trends, eagerly embraced by Gen Z. This generation is not just pulling bits and pieces from the past; they are resurrecting entire styles, colors, and vibes that once defined eras long gone. From the eclectic fashion statements reminiscent of the '90s to the nostalgic music and art influences of earlier decades, it’s fascinating to witness how they breathe new life into these forgotten fads, blending them seamlessly with their own unique identities.
One of the biggest trends Gen Z has revived is Y2K fashion. This includes low-rise jeans, baby tees, and chunky sneakers, which were all the rage in the early 2000s. Many Millennials fondly remember these iconic styles from their teenage years, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connection to their past.
Julia Erins from Salisbury, NC usually wanders the streets of her town when she’s bored. In between working her 9-5 job, Erins feels as a millennial, Gen Z creates this vibrancy in their style of fashion around town.
“Seeing the rich outfits of Gen Z, especially since it’s what I used to wear as a teenager, never doubt to surprise me,” Erins said. “Most times out of ten, the styles I’ve seen are one hundred times better than anything I could’ve come up with. I enjoy seeing the combos.”
It is not just Y2K fashion—Gen Z is also embracing, elements from even earlier decades, such as ‘80s and ‘90s aesthetics are of interest to the generation. Vinyl records, disposable cameras, and wired headphones have all made a significant comeback.
For Maddox Ritchenbig, his Bronx, NY apartment, created him to grow up surrounded by the latest technology, it might seem odd to choose these "outdated" items.
“Personally, yes I love my iPhone and my Apple products, but when I went to my great-grandmother’s house, I was 12 when I noticed her vinyl player,” Ritchenbig said.
However, it's important to understand that for Ritchenbig, it's really about the nostalgia and the experience of using these items and all the uniqueness they have to offer. He finds comfort in these choices, creating a connection to a different time.
“Even now, I’m about to move for college but every vintage thing I’ve found at thrift stores or given to from older relatives, I’d treasure more than my electronics,” Ritchenbig said. “I might not be able to witness their teenage years, but I can feel the recollections of it.”
Slang from previous generations is making a vibrant comeback in Gen Z communication. This generation uses a variety of greetings, such as "son" and "bro," to express connection. Additionally, their tendency to abbreviate words adds briefness and punchiness, highlighting a shared linguistic evolution across the ages.
High school teacher, Mr. Kaillin, engages with a mix of all grade levels. In his classroom, students feel free to express themselves and get through with how they feel. In most case scenarios, students express themselves in their language.
“When I used slang, the more I used it, the less stupid I felt,” Kaillin said. “Even though I don’t use it as much anymore, being a teacher and hearing certain phrases make me laugh in my mind.”
What is it about the past that captivates Gen Z so deeply? Some suggest that the vibrant world of social media plays a pivotal role, where nostalgic aesthetics circulate like wildfire, igniting memories and emotions from previous years. People see fashion and trends as a cycle that repeats over time. Styles that once seemed outdated come back in new forms.
Regardless of the underlying reasons, it’s clear that Gen Z is reviving the charm of bygone eras, infusing it with fresh energy and creativity. To older generations, this resurgence might seem amusing—or even a little cringe-worthy—but one undeniable truth remains: history is destined to repeat itself, and in the realm of fashion, the echoes of the past resonate louder than ever before.
